Acting Deputy Chief Constable Rob Griffin testified before the Nottingham Inquiry on Monday regarding the force’s handling of Valdo Calocane’s three murders in June 2023. Griffin served as assistant chief constable during the incident and was the senior officer on duty when Calocane killed University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both aged 19, as well as 65-year-old grandfather Ian Coates. The attacker then tried to strike three additional people using Mr Coates’ stolen van. The senior officer discussed Nottinghamshire Police’s inability to arrest Calocane prior to the attacks. The 31-year-old had been sought for eight months after failing to appear in court on charges of assaulting a police officer, yet no officers had attempted to locate him. Griffin characterized this as “a serious systemic operational failure on the part of Nottinghamshire Police.” Nevertheless, he stated that imprisonment for the assault would not have been realistic. The inquiry will receive testimony from grieving families and those who survived. Emma Webber, mother of victim Barnaby, had previously told Griffin he had “blood on your hands.” The inquiry proceedings continue.
