A Leicestershire Police officer described as lacking experience failed to discover that Valdo Calocane had an active warrant outstanding against him in the weeks prior to his deadly attack in Nottingham that claimed three lives. Four officers from Leicestershire Police provided testimony during the inquiry session on March 11, with PC Libbie Taylor among those who gave evidence regarding her investigation into the warehouse incident. At the time she was assigned the case, Taylor had only completed 12 operational shifts. The assault at the warehouse occurred merely five days after Calocane began his employment at the Arvato facility in Kegworth during May 2023. The individual, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, struck a male coworker about the face and head, causing the victim to report feeling severely disoriented and frightened. Calocane subsequently kicked the man’s spouse when she attempted to intervene on her husband’s behalf, with both individuals requiring medical care at hospital. Calocane stated during the investigation that the altercation began because he had been pushed. Operations supervisor Volodimir informed the hearing that Calocane claimed to have been searching for his spectacles following the incident. Volodimir nevertheless observed what appeared to be a Stanley-style knife and kicked it out of Calocane’s reach. PC Taylor acknowledged that her lack of experience led to several errors, including overlooking Calocane’s outstanding warrant and permitting critical body-worn video recordings to be permanently erased from police systems. Merely six weeks afterward, Calocane used a stolen van to fatally stab Barney Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates in Nottingham, additionally injuring three other individuals.
