The relatives of Ian Coates provided emotional evidence during the Nottingham Inquiry looking into the events leading to his death in June 2023. Elaine Newton, Mr Coates’ partner, informed the inquiry on March 24 that police initially informed her that her partner had perished in a vehicle collision. She described feeling as though he had “died twice.” His sons James and Lee expressed that they felt like an “afterthought” because of the wait in obtaining essential information regarding their father’s death and killer Valdo Calocane’s prior interactions with authorities. The inquiry heard that Nottinghamshire Police left the 65-year-old’s remains on Magdala Road, Mapperley Park, for 15 hours after he was fatally attacked on June 13, 2023. The force had also left Mr Coates covered only by blankets for two hours before erecting a tent. Mr Coates, described as a devoted family man and passionate Nottingham Forest supporter, became the third person fatally stabbed by paranoid schizophrenic Calocane. The killer had earlier murdered University of Nottingham students Grace O’Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber, both 19 years old. Calocane stole Mr Coates’ van and employed it to try to murder three additional individuals in Nottingham city centre.
