Police testify at Nottingham inquiry over Valdo Calocane case

Additional law enforcement personnel provided testimony during the second week of the public examination into the Nottingham incident. The three individuals who lost their lives were student Barnaby Webber, age 19, alongside Grace O’Malley-Kumar, also 19, and 65-year-old Ian Coates – all fatally stabbed by Calocane on June 13, 2023. Following the stabbings, the perpetrator used Mr Coates’ van to strike three additional people.

Evidence presented during the initial week demonstrated that University of Nottingham employees had received no information regarding Calocane’s violent actions, despite him having paranoid schizophrenia. They had no knowledge of a medical document from July 2020 which contained a warning that he “could perhaps end up killing someone.”

Family members of those who died expressed criticism toward the university for not taking stronger action in response to the warning signals. Calocane had attended the institution up until approximately one year prior to carrying out the attacks on the two younger victims.

Representatives from Nottinghamshire Police acknowledged “unacceptable failures” in their management of the triple homicide case. Nevertheless, they maintained that preventing the widespread violence across the city would not have been achievable.

On March 2, a total of five officers appeared before the judge-led investigation, consisting of three sergeants, one inspector, and a constable.
