Forest could face relegation play-off in Premier League first

Published on

Nottingham Forest might find themselves in a relegation play-off scenario should an unlikely sequence of events occur during the campaign’s conclusion. Despite occupying a position above the bottom three, the club will be watching nervously as the season reaches its climax. A possibility exists where a play-off match would decide the fate between Forest and Leeds United in terms of relegation. If this materializes, it would represent an unprecedented first in Premier League history. This unusual play-off would be activated if both teams finish level on points, goal difference, and total goals scored. Should all three criteria remain equal, the head-to-head record between the two sides would be consulted, followed by away goals from those respective encounters. Both league meetings this term ended in 3-1 victories for the home team. Consequently, neither head-to-head record nor away goals would be able to separate them. If it ultimately comes down to head-to-head record, the sole remaining method to differentiate between the two clubs would be a single play-off fixture at a neutral venue. The winners of that contest would preserve their Premier League standing, while the losers would drop to the Championship. Although the possibility remains extremely unlikely, it cannot be completely dismissed. Both teams sit in 15th and 16th position in the league table, with Leeds (36 points) holding a three-point advantage over Forest (33 points). The club nicknamed The Whites were, at the time of writing, leading Wolves 2-0, which would extend their lead over Forest by another three points. Both sides would need to be overtaken by 18th-placed Tottenham (30 points) and 17th-placed West Ham (32 points). The teams are separated by just two goals in goal difference, with Leeds having scored 51 times compared to Forest’s 44. Forest return to Premier League action when they host Burnley at the City Ground on Sunday afternoon. Both Forest and Leeds go into their upcoming matches in positive spirits, with Leeds having secured a 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Monday evening. Forest, meanwhile, advanced to the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday following a 1-0 win against Porto. Tottenham are scheduled to face Brighton and Hove Albion at home in Saturday’s 5.30pm encounter. West Ham travel to Crystal Palace on Monday evening with an 8pm kick-off.
