Nottingham shop relocates to former New Look store after 24 years in business

A menswear retailer in Nottingham’s central shopping district is moving to larger premises after spending 24 years at its current site.

Slater Menswear is shifting less than 200 yards from its current outlet in The Poultry at the Flying Horse Walk to a unit on Thurland Street previously occupied by New Look.

The upcoming venue will cover twice the floor area of the existing shop. The space is currently undergoing refurbishment and, subject to everything proceeding as expected, the launch is scheduled for Thursday, August 6.

The company, which forms part of a nationwide group, stocks professional attire, nuptial garments, leisure clothing and footwear alongside a formal rental service and complimentary tailoring.

Department manager Edward Whittaker explained that the business is expanding beyond what the current location can accommodate. He noted that weekends in particular see significant customer numbers, making additional square footage essential.

The establishment does particularly strong business in garments for weddings, proms and graduation ceremonies, priced between £99 and £375.

According to Mr Whittaker, demand has shifted considerably away from career-focused suiting toward outfits for events and special occasions. While the business does provide rental options, these predominantly comprise highland wear and formal evening attire.

Purchasing and renting suits now carry comparable price tags. Mr Whittaker pointed out that a typical suit retails at approximately £159, while hiring a three-piece ensemble comes to around £120 to £130, leaving customers with little financial difference between the two choices.

He expressed confidence that the business distinguishes itself through service standards, offering shoppers a tailored experience whatever level of assistance they prefer.

Mr Whittaker has been employed at the outlet for almost 18 years, while the store manager has been present since the beginning, overseeing a team of roughly 15 staff members.

He mentioned that the proximity of the new site prompted lighthearted suggestions about transporting inventory on foot, drawing comparison to when employees of Jessops, now trading as John Lewis, conveyed mannequins from their King Street outlet to the Victoria Centre in 1972.

He added that the arrangement means the new premises will be established as a fresh store with all inventory already in place, allowing the team to shut the current location one evening and welcome customers at the new site the following day.
