Dramatic pictures show the scale of a huge Nottingham scrapyard fire that crews are still trying to extinguish hours after it started.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue officials say they’re ‘optimistic’ that the fire can be put out in the coming hours and that the Radford Road fire is ‘contained’ to the affected scrapyard.

The incident was first reported at 10.31am on Wednesday (July 8) and the smoke could be seen for miles around.

Incident commander Tom Staples told the media at the scene at around 1pm: “We’ve got a large amount of scrap metal on fire. Currently the incident is under control.

“We’ve evacuated approximately five homes in the immediate vicinity. The business affected has been evacuated.

“We are optimistic that in the next few hours, they will be able to return to their homes. It’s too early to tell [what started the fire], but we’ll do a thorough investigation once the fire has been put out.”

Mr Staples also said the fire was ‘contained’ within the scrapyard and that no injuries had been reported as a result of the fire at this stage.
