Nearly 90 additional schools throughout the East Midlands will provide complimentary breakfast sessions for students as part of an initiative intended to enhance children’s wellbeing at the start of the day and reduce childcare expenditure for families.

Institutions across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire will obtain government financing for these fresh programmes.

Commencing in September, schools throughout the area must also satisfy fresh statutory restrictions on the quantity of branded clothing items required for pupils.

This follows survey data indicating approximately one-third of families continue to harbour concerns about clothing expenses. Ministers suggest the fresh breakfast provision could decrease spending by £450 per child.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson stated that no parent should have to decide between a summer excursion to the seaside and equipping their child for school. She explained that from September, households would notice changes at school gates: complimentary breakfast provision at an additional 1,400 schools, a conclusion to expensive branded clothing catalogues, and additional complimentary midday meals for those requiring them. She said this represented the childhood this administration champions and why they would always strive to offer every child the strongest possible beginning.

The administration has previously outlined that the proposals would involve removing unhealthy options such as sausage rolls and pizzas from dining halls, with more nutritious alternatives including wholemeal bread, brown pasta and rice introduced to address elevated childhood obesity levels.
