Firefighters have been working at the location since Wednesday morning following the outbreak of a major blaze.
The emergency services received their first call about the fire at the scrapyard on Radford Road in Old Basford at 10.31am on Wednesday, July 8.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service stated in an afternoon update that completely containing the inferno would probably require several additional hours of work.
The fire service announced that two fire trucks and an elevated platform device remained deployed along Radford Road in Nottingham as crews continued their efforts to bring the situation under control.
Radford Road stays shut between Northgate and Eland Street for the duration of the operation.
Firefighters are anticipated to stay at the location for several more hours while they strive to fully bring the flames under control.
Alongside the partial road closure, Nottinghamshire Police has also cleared residents and business owners from neighbouring properties.
Earlier, the fire service had urged those living in proximity to the incident to remain clear of the flames and shield themselves from the smoke.
A representative stated that anyone residing or working nearby should keep doors and windows sealed.
The representative emphasised that people should stay away from the zone, noting that this constitutes an emergency situation and that crews require space to operate and reach the site.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service had earlier confirmed that at the peak of the fire, it had deployed six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform capable of spraying water onto structures from above.
The blaze has caused significant worry among local residents and traders who faced evacuation.
Tammy Graham, who rents one of the five residential properties that were evacuated, described to the Nottingham Post the distressing moment when she had to abandon her pets after officers arrived at her door to instruct her and her family to leave.
Kyle Ryan, who operates the hardware store Perceptive Fittings on Radford Road, indicated that the consequences of the fire and any additional disruption this week could result in losses running into tens of thousands of pounds for his business.
