The project will require four and a half years to finish, though the school will continue functioning normally throughout the entire period.

One of Nottinghamshire’s highest-performing secondary schools is poised for a transformation described as a rare opportunity, with the vast majority of current structures scheduled for demolition.

Toot Hill School, situated in Bingham, has lodged proposals to replace approximately 85 percent of its present accommodation alongside grounds improvements and upgrades to vehicle access points for coaches and buses.

The institution, which currently has roughly 1,800 students on its roll, originally opened its doors as a comprehensive establishment in 1969 and was recently recognised as Nottinghamshire’s top-performing secondary school by The Daily Telegraph.

The proposal aims to allow the school to accommodate an additional 250 pupils.

The works, which await consent from Rushcliffe Borough Council, are intended to minimise interference with teaching activities and are projected to span four and a half years, according to planning documentation.

The initiative forms part of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme and will proceed through distinct stages, with the initial phase specifically designed to ensure all currently occupied accommodation can remain safely in use.

Once the first new structure is finished, the relevant departments will relocate into it and work will commence on removing the buildings they previously occupied.

Following completion of demolition, the second and final structure will subsequently be erected on the foundations left behind.

The purpose of this staged approach is to maintain operations throughout and limit any negative effects on pupils’ education and day-to-day experience.

This approach should also enable the various community organisations that utilise the school grounds to maintain their activities during construction.

The application describes this as an exceptional chance to address the difficulties presently created by the site.

The existing accommodation has been assessed as no longer suitable for its purpose, with evaluations concluding that the structures have exceeded their usable lifespan and can no longer be economically repaired or updated.

The present site has additionally suffered from access problems resulting from frequent changes in ground levels across internal and external areas.

The scheme proposes that by consolidating the number of structures and expanding available outdoor areas, the project will enhance accessibility while simultaneously producing a more unified, appealing and practical educational environment.

The pair of new constructions will boost the efficiency of the site by consolidating the school’s teaching spaces, encompassing a newly designed science, technology, engineering and mathematics facility intended to foster cross-subject working.

Regarding environmental considerations, the scheme states that the new accommodation will operate entirely on electricity with no fossil fuels, with the exception of requirements for science teaching.
