Nottinghamshire primary school begs for air conditioning as pupils leave due to heat

Published on

A primary school in Nottinghamshire is appealing to the public for financial assistance to purchase cooling systems after oppressive heat caused pupils to become dangerously hot and required them to leave early.

Temperatures inside classrooms at Queen Eleanor Primary in Harby, close to Newark, climbed to approximately 40C during the most recent period of extreme heat, according to the headteacher, who warned conditions would deteriorate further during future summers.

Shelly Wright stated that pupils had to be collected by families after displaying signs of heat exhaustion. She noted that young children find it difficult to control their own body temperature, making the circumstances hazardous.

Parents were offered the option to pick up their offspring when conditions became unbearable, though Wright observed this resulted in considerable disruption.

The headteacher, who has served at the school for many years, revealed that temperatures inside the Victorian building peaked at 38C earlier in the year.

Children were permitted to wear their sports clothing and enjoy water-based activities to find relief from the intense temperatures. However, restrictions imposed by the local water company prevented the outdoor water games.

With the school year now concluded for Wright’s 65 pupils, the institution is being proactive about preparing for the next summer by fitting cooling units in all teaching spaces.

A crowdfunding campaign initiated by the school has gathered more than £700 so far against a goal of £2,400.

Wright expressed concern that such extreme heat would become increasingly frequent. She remarked that it was troubling to have to seek public donations for fundamental amenities that workplaces typically provide, describing the situation as unjust.

She added that rising global temperatures meant conditions would continue to become more severe.

While families had been tremendously helpful, Wright acknowledged the arrangement was highly inconvenient. She emphasised the school also had an obligation to ensure the wellbeing of its employees.
