Reform UK warned over risky decision that may backfire

Recent behaviour from Reform concerning a Nottinghamshire MP has caused considerable concern

Criticising Reform UK is not always welcomed by the party in the way opposition parties have traditionally accepted such commentary for decades.

Nigel Farage has grown increasingly defensive as questions about his financial affairs intensify, and regular readers will recall the Nottingham Post’s own history of unexpectedly provoking controversy.

Our own relationships locally have improved significantly, but fostering good relations should never mean sacrificing rigorous examination. The party’s conduct this week has been deeply concerning.

The digital landscape was already saturated with falsehoods and misleading content before artificial intelligence amplified this problem exponentially, which makes it all the more important that public figures model responsible communication.

Instead, Reform politicians this week shared a video of a Nottinghamshire MP that had already been thoroughly debunked last year.

The footage supposedly showed Labour MP for Bassetlaw in North Nottinghamshire, Jo White, stating that she did not care if they stopped the boats.

After the video first circulated in 2025, the MP promptly released a clarification explaining that her actual words during the constituent meeting were that she did not care who would stop the boats and that her number one priority was to stop those boats.

Despite the full facts about the video being established a year prior, Robert Jenrick and Nigel Farage both chose to reshare the misleading original version following Jo White’s appointment as Immigration Minister this week.

The MP was compelled to repeat the same clarification she had issued 12 months earlier, and both Mr Jenrick and Mr Farage eventually removed their posts, with the latter doing so considerably later.

A Reform representative informed the Nottingham Post that they had relied on a Guido Fawkes article about the video but acknowledged the piece might not have provided the full picture.

The article in question actually contains Jo White’s complete clarification about the video’s contents, and only a brief scan is needed to locate it.

So why does this political exchange warrant more attention than the constant stream of such squabbles pouring out of Westminster every day?

The reason this incident merits attention is precisely why it represents something considerably graver than typical political tit-for-tat.

Public confidence is crucial. We are witnessing growing warnings about fabricated or manipulated content online, from scams bearing local council branding to supposed news websites that are anything but genuine.

Errors can certainly occur, but the record must always be publicly corrected with an apology offered. At the time of publication, this had not yet happened here.

An apology may seem futile to Reform. The misinformation has been disseminated and many people may now hold a mistaken impression without ever encountering the truth.

This distortion was also shared despite the clarity established 12 months ago, and regardless of whether those distributing the video this week were fully aware of that context, it is evident that greater effort should have been made to verify the facts before spreading this falsehood.

Dismissing this level of misinformation is a dangerous precedent, and our politicians should instead be setting the standard on this issue, particularly given that those propagating fakery may one day find themselves targeted by the same tactics.
