Major moorland fires are occurring with growing frequency as the climate emergency unfolds – and our mapping shows the locations facing the highest danger in Nottinghamshire.

This week, the Environment Agency announced that fifty percent of England was experiencing drought conditions because of extreme heat and minimal precipitation.

The Water Minister has cautioned residents to brace for this permanent shift attributed to climate change, and as waterways deplete, millions face restrictions on garden hoses while the possibility of uncontrolled blazes grows.

Emergency crews have been fighting severe fires throughout Britain this summer, especially at Tintwistle Moor in the adjacent Derbyshire region and at Dovestone in Greater Manchester.

Across the continent, Spain declared a national emergency as several wildfires combined into one uncontrollable wall of flame, while French authorities ordered residents to leave their homes.

Researchers have now leveraged information from the Moorland Association to generate a map displaying fire danger levels throughout the county.

The organisation employed publicly available datasets and specialist evaluation to determine threat levels within each parliamentary constituency, using ten measurements across three distinct risk areas.

While the danger in Nottinghamshire remains relatively modest compared to other regions of the nation, the information indicates that the High Peak constituency in Derbyshire – where the substantial moorland fire at Tintwistle Moor has been burning – faces the most severe risk.

Firefighters initially responded to Tintwistle Moor, close to Glossop, on June 24, with emergency services declaring a major incident there on July 13.

Calder Valley, encompassing portions of West Yorkshire such as Hebden Bridge, the setting for the acclaimed series Happy Valley, ranks as the second-most vulnerable area.

Tiverton and Minehead, covering the area between Devon and Somerset, represents the third-most endangered region.

The leader of the Moorland Association attributed rewilding initiatives for populating Britain’s highland areas with extremely combustible plant life that is burning at alarming speeds.

He urged the incoming Prime Minister to implement urgent measures enabling landowners and game managers to decrease this hazardous surplus of vegetation.

According to Mr Gilruth, failing to take action would result in environmental destruction and potential loss of life among fire crews and residents.

Conversely, the chief executive of Rewilding Britain stated that holding rewilding responsible entirely sidesteps the real problem, noting that simply clearing vegetation from our highlands provides no solution to the wildfire danger.

She explained that Britain’s escalating wildfire threat is being caused by climate change and the decline of the natural systems everyone relies on, rather than by attempts to restore nature.

As hotter, drier conditions elevate wildfire probability, efforts should concentrate on preventing fires from igniting through improved public understanding, guaranteeing fire and rescue services possess adequate resources for swift response, and developing environments that can withstand fires more effectively when they do happen.

Functional peatlands and beaver-created wetlands can establish living, moisture-rich buffers against wildfire. Through reintroducing a varied mix of native forests, heathlands and wetlands, soils can become natural water storage systems and create barriers that impede flame progression.
