Fire crews tackle Nottinghamshire field blaze as smoke rises

More outdoor blazes than typical have been responded to by fire crews

Emergency services are tackling a significant field blaze in Nottinghamshire as imagery reveals massive clouds of smoke rising skyward.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue initially reported at 3pm on Monday (August 3) that crews were tackling a blaze at agricultural land on Carter Lane in Church Warsop, close to Mansfield.

Initially six fire appliances were attending, though the fire service later updated at 4pm that nine appliances had arrived at the location along with two water tankers.

According to the fire service: no injuries have been reported, and residents in the vicinity are being advised to keep windows and doors shut due to the smoke. Carter Lane remains shut while operations continue.

Connor Wilton encountered the fire in its initial phase while travelling to a Subway outlet. At around 5pm, he described the situation as follows: the routes are blocked in both directions from Warsop Vale and Church Warsop, approximately ten or more fire appliances are present with numerous officers restricting most roads and entry points.

The blaze appears to be contained, though occasional flare-ups occur in specific sections. Local farmers are working effectively to establish firebreaks in adjacent fields to protect farms and residences, though one of their JCB telehandlers unfortunately became caught in the fire’s path.

The Warsop Wildlife Rescue Team, a small voluntary group operating locally, shared information about the incident’s effects and stated: emergency responders are cognisant of the extensive fire on the farmer’s agricultural land.

Although deeply thankful that the harvest had recently been completed, this remains a tragic circumstance for both the farmer and local wildlife populations.

Numerous creatures will have lost their habitats, with many now fleeing in confusion while seeking refuge, sustenance, and hydration.

The organisation is urging residents to watch for wildlife in the area over the coming days. Where possible, gardens should be made welcoming to wildlife through maintaining quiet zones where creatures can rest without disturbance and by offering shallow containers of clean water.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue had previously implored residents to heed safety guidance this summer as the region endures exceptionally warm and arid weather patterns.
