Nottingham council approves £20.4m investment in roads, solar power and cleaner streets

Nottingham City Council’s Executive Board has given the green light to a £20.4 million one-off funding package for services and projects throughout the city.

The investment, financed through underspend in the authority’s 2025/26 budget, constitutes the third phase of supplementary funding and will support improvements to roads, assistance for local enterprises, measures addressing fuel costs, complimentary recreational activities for senior citizens, environmental cleanliness and community safety.

The allocation breaks down into several key areas.

Approximately £4 million will address pothole repairs and enhance road surfaces across Nottingham.

A sum of £2.5 million has been designated for solar installations, battery storage systems and additional energy efficiency measures intended to lower household energy expenditure.

City centre environmental improvements receive £1.5 million to create more attractive public areas.

An 18-month pilot scheme valued at £1.2 million will provide complimentary leisure centre membership to residents who have reached pensionable age.

Business support includes £1 million in focused business rates relief benefiting more than 250 small enterprises.

Community protection receives substantial attention through funding for 20 additional Community Protection Officers at a cost exceeding £930,000 and 20 supplementary litter collection staff costing over £650,000.

Unpaid carers will benefit from £500,000 in practical assistance.

Green infrastructure improvements across the city amount to £400,000 for trees and open spaces.

Highway drainage improvements represent £340,000, addressing blocked drains and reducing flooding risk while enhancing the public environment.

Healthcare provisions include £324,000 for strengthened intermediate care services helping residents maintain independence.

Support for care leavers amounts to £300,000, covering education, employment, housing, health and general wellbeing.

Additional resources will fund graffiti clearance, initiatives combating antisocial behaviour and retail crime, installation of new and refurbished waste receptacles, enhanced road and street signage, chewing gum removal, volunteer Clean Champion programmes, and events and cultural activities.

The funding aligns with the Respect for Nottingham programme, which aims to deliver observable enhancements to streets and neighbourhoods alongside increased frontline personnel working to maintain city cleanliness and safety.

Councillor Ethan Radford, Deputy Leader of Nottingham City Council, stated that the £20.4 million package represented substantial investment in the city, its residents and future development.

The authority emphasised that residents expected fundamental services delivered effectively, encompassing cleaner streets, improved roads, safer communities and welcoming public spaces.

The funding would enable additional Community Protection Officers and litter collectors on streets, expanded pothole repairs, graffiti tackling and investment in both the city centre and residential areas.

The investment also encompassed provisions for carers and care leavers, initiatives enabling older residents to increase physical activity and measures assisting households in reducing energy costs.

Support for small businesses experiencing elevated operational expenses was also incorporated.

The council indicated that careful work had ensured proposals were achievable, represented value for money and directly served priorities outlined in the Council Plan.
