Nottingham residents are set to benefit from a new scheme offering complimentary collections of large household items.
Beginning in October 2026, every household within the city boundaries will be permitted to arrange two complimentary bulky waste pickups annually, with a maximum of six articles removed during each visit.
The booking system will become operational on 19 October 2026, with inaugural collections scheduled to commence from 26 October onwards.
This initiative aims to assist homeowners in eliminating oversized belongings that exceed standard bin dimensions, while simultaneously contributing to tidier streets and a decrease in illegal dumping incidents throughout Nottingham.
The service will accommodate an extensive variety of household goods, encompassing furniture such as tables, sofas, armchairs, wardrobes and mattresses, alongside electrical appliances including fridge freezers, televisions and tumble dryers.
Due to current environmental legislation, upholstered seating and electronic devices may be subject to separate collection procedures to guarantee their safe and proper processing.
Additionally, the scheme will facilitate the secure disposal of upholstered furniture containing Persistent Organic Pollutants, thereby preventing harmful chemicals from leaching into the environment, entering food systems and contaminating other recyclable materials.
Councillor Sam Lux, Executive member for Environment and Sustainability, stated that responsible disposal of large items delivers clear environmental advantages, reducing waste volumes, improving material recovery rates and maintaining attractive communities.
This provision would also guarantee that items incorporating POPs receive appropriate and safe treatment, safeguarding both residents and the natural environment.
Residents will be able to schedule their complimentary bulky waste appointments via the internet from 19 October 2026.
Requests will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, with a continuously available four-week advance booking window.
Complete information regarding eligibility criteria, accepted items and collection procedures will be published on the Nottingham City Council bulky waste collection webpage.
