Nottingham City Council invests £500,000 in unpaid carers programme

Published on

Nottingham’s unpaid carers are set to receive improved support through a half-million-pound funding initiative approved by the city council.

The investment will enhance respite services, introduce digital assistance, improve equipment access and enable earlier identification of individuals providing unpaid care.

The £500,000 allocation forms part of a broader £20 million package designated for various city services and projects, sourced from a one-time budget surplus within the council’s 2025/26 financial plans.

The funding will support Nottingham’s Joint Carers Strategy for 2023-2028 and address areas where carers and partner organisations have highlighted potential improvements.

The programme aims to strengthen assistance for the thousands of unpaid carers who enable family members, friends and neighbours to remain living independently within the community.

Implementation will focus on improving access to respite options, developing technology-based support, facilitating equipment provision and working alongside community groups to reach hidden carers before difficulties escalate.

The initiative will be delivered collaboratively with health services and voluntary sector partners, establishing fresh routes for carers to obtain appropriate help.

The enhanced support will be rolled out progressively over the coming months, with further announcements expected as services become operational.

Councillor Helen Kalsi, the council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health, stated that informal caregivers constitute the essential foundation of the health and care system, frequently providing vital assistance to loved ones without receiving proper recognition.

She noted that this funding reflects the council’s commitment to ensuring carers obtain the support they require.

The investment forms part of the council’s wider decision to allocate more than £20 million across Nottingham, with the aim of modernising support services, improving access to relief and practical assistance, and identifying individuals who need help before they reach crisis point.

Collaboration with voluntary and community organisations will provide carers with resources, guidance and support necessary to preserve their own wellbeing while continuing their caring responsibilities.
