Firefighters continue to battle a major blaze at a Nottingham scrapyard, several hours after it began.

Rescue teams from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue remain hopeful the flames can be brought under control within the next few hours. Officials confirm the Radford Road blaze remains confined to the scrapyard itself.

The emergency was initially logged at 10.31am on Wednesday (July 8), with thick plumes of smoke visible across a wide area.

Incident commander Tom Staples addressed reporters near the scene at approximately 1pm. He said a significant quantity of scrap metal was ablaze but the situation was currently under control. Approximately five residences in the immediate area were evacuated along with the business premises. He expressed optimism that residents would be able to return to their homes within the next few hours. Regarding the cause, he stated it was too early to determine what sparked the blaze, but investigators would conduct a comprehensive inquiry once the fire had been fully extinguished.

Staples added the fire remained restricted to the scrapyard boundaries and no casualties had been reported as of this point.
