A former Indian restaurant in Mansfield could be transformed into a laundrette under proposals currently under review by the local council. Clay Oven Tandoori ceased operations in February at Madeline Court in Berry Hill, and an application has been filed with Mansfield District Council seeking approval for a self-service laundry business to occupy the empty premises. The company behind the proposal, Speed Queen, markets itself as the premier self-service laundry brand globally and maintains a network of over 1,000 locations throughout Europe.
Through a dedicated mobile application, patrons would be able to check machine availability, monitor remaining time on wash or drying cycles, and receive notifications upon completion. Transactions could be processed via contactless methods including bank cards and mobile wallet services. The proposed facility would operate daily from 7am through 10pm at the small shopping center, which also houses a OneStop convenience store and Cello’s Bar & Brasserie and provides parking for customers.
According to documentation submitted to the council, alterations to the existing space would be limited, primarily involving internal layout changes along with required electrical, gas, and plumbing work. In a supporting statement, the applicant LCP Management Ltd expressed that the initiative supports both local and national planning objectives, encourages economic development, and delivers a beneficial service to residents. The submission further noted that the proposed use would enhance the area’s commercial vitality and overall viability, with no significant negative impacts anticipated.
Speed Queen utilizes a centralized management system to oversee its equipment and locations remotely, with a dedicated customer service and operations team monitoring performance data, cycle information, and potential issues in real-time. The company emphasizes customer satisfaction as a fundamental priority, with the remote monitoring capability enabling swift identification and resolution of problems while minimizing inconvenience to users. The system also permits operators to disable machines remotely when necessary. While the locations operate without on-site staff, contracted cleaning services maintain the facilities on a regular basis.
