Rain is on the horizon for Nottingham as conditions finally begin to cool, though projections indicate August will bring less precipitation than typical.

The situation follows severe drought conditions affecting half of England and the entirety of Wales, with July on track to become the driest month ever recorded.

England received merely 7 per cent of its typical July rainfall, while the south of the country experienced just 1 per cent of normal levels.

The combination of scorching temperatures and minimal precipitation has sparked grass fires, caused transport problems, and forced schools to shut, leaving many outdoor spaces across England looking distinctly parched.

Temperatures climbing early in August have triggered an amber health warning for the East Midlands, remaining in effect until Wednesday August 5 at 9am.

This warning, published by the UK Health Security Agency, encompasses the East Midlands, East Anglia, the southeast, and the capital.

The remaining areas of the nation, excluding the North East, fall under a lesser yellow health alert.

Nottingham can expect thermometers to climb once more on Monday August 3, reaching 28C by early afternoon.

Tuesday August 4 should bring marginally lower readings, peaking at 27C in the mid-afternoon with bright spells and only a 30 per cent possibility of precipitation around 2pm.

By Wednesday, values continue their downward trend, with maximums of 25C anticipated, feeling closer to 20C.

The period of extreme heat should end by Thursday August 6 when figures fall to 19C and overcast skies with possible rain are forecast.

The Met Office’s extended outlook for August 7 to 16 states that high pressure may become more established over northern regions while lower pressure persists further south.

This pattern raises the likelihood of Atlantic weather systems or thundery periods impacting southern parts, notably compared with recent weeks, though precipitation could be uneven with some localities receiving modest amounts.

For the most part, temperatures appear set to stay above typical levels, particularly in southern regions, though possibly without the remarkable heat witnessed in recent weeks.

Warmer than usual conditions and episodes of hot weather or heatwaves are anticipated towards month’s end.

This persistent warmth follows four heatwaves since May that shattered records, prompting some agricultural producers to flag possible supply issues.

May and June heatwaves each broke their respective monthly records, with 37.7C logged in June.

Nottinghamshire experienced its highest June overnight temperature on record at 21.3C.
