A tiny side-street cafe is bringing Italian dessert joy to a Nottinghamshire town. Tiramisu & Co. has been open in Beeston for a month and still the queues are coming, both new and returning customers.

The popular dessert is the speciality at the eight-seater spot – and not just the classic recipe where lady fingers are soaked in espresso coffee, layered with mascarpone and dusted with cocoa powder.

Sweet-toothed fans will find the classic, along with pistachio, Nutella and salted caramel on sale every day.

Daily specials have a twist with boundless flavours. It could be Lotus Biscoff, peanut butter, or dulce de leche, perhaps something fruity like strawberry, blueberry, lemon curd, or chocolate with apricot (sachetorte) or cherry (Black Forest).

The family business is run by Francesco Pontoriero, who is working as a nuclear energy engineer when he’s not at Tiramisu & Co, together with his mother Gabriella and sister Antonella.

The tiramisu, along with gelato and Calabrian panuozzi sandwiches, are all made fresh daily at the premises in Regent Street.

Tiramisu often contains alcohol, typically Marsala wine or coffee-flavoured liqueur, to soak the lady fingers, but here they’re alcohol-free, so they’re suitable for everyone.

Gelato comes in flavours such as spagnola (cherry), banoffee pie, blueberry cheesecake, strawberry and mango. Another sweet treat is cannoli (a filled pastry tube).

Hearty panuozzi are filled with Italian favourites salami, Parma ham, mortadella, mozzarella and parmigiana (aubergine).

But it’s the tiramisu that’s attracting the most attention. Priced at £3.90 for a regular portion and £5.50 for large, it’s an affordable treat.

For every customer eating in, there are even more queuing for a takeaway.

Francesco said: “We noticed no one in the area was selling tiramisu. The most popular is the classic but people also like the pistachio and the Nutella. Me and my mum share making the tiramisu and gelato, starting from fresh ingredients.

“We make the bread for the sandwiches and my sister mainly does the TikTok and Instagram side.

“The response has been pretty good. We didn’t expect it. I think it’s because there is no similar concept in the area so people really like it. They like the taste. It’s authentic, made from the proper recipe.”

The light texture is down to the fact that the mascarpone isn’t laden with sugar like many shop-bought versions and there is even a vegan-friendly version now and again at weekends if they get enough requests.

Returning customer Louise Gealy said: “It is amazing. Probably the best tiramisu I’ve ever tried. It’s not sickly or too sweet.

“We came last week and we’re back again this week with some friends. I had the original last time and I’m getting tiramisu again today but I don’t know which flavour.

“The cannoli are amazing too. I had the lemon one last week and I bought my husband the pistachio but I ate it, so I’ll get him another one today.”

Tracey Sulley said: “It’s dangerously delicious. I had a takeaway tiramisu. I could have tried one of everything, though. I’m definitely going back.

“I hope they are successful. There were people nipping in and out as I was there and it was only just 10am. They were so friendly too. I only parked outside to nip in to Beeston. It certainly was a magical find.”
