Nottingham car washes, barber shop raided in people smuggling probe

Law enforcement officers have taken two individuals into custody following coordinated operations in Nottingham and additional UK locations, focusing on an organization believed to be involved in clandestine immigration operations. The men, ages 27 and 29, were apprehended on suspicion of money laundering by officials from the National Crime Agency at locations on Bentinck Road in Radford and in Folkestone, Kent on Wednesday morning, April 22. The detentions came after authorities searched a vehicle cleaning establishment on Woodhouse Way in Nuthall, another similar business on Beechdale Road in Aspley, and a hair salon on Radford Road in Hyson Green earlier the same day. Officers also executed a search at a home in Derby. The group being examined by the NCA allegedly arranges unauthorized entry into the United Kingdom for migrants and subsequently places them in employment throughout businesses in the East Midlands region. Both individuals remain in detention and are undergoing questioning by detectives, according to the agency. The car wash facility in Nuthall received a civil penalty notice from the Home Office’s immigration enforcement division due to the employment of an undocumented worker. Craig Turner, the NCA’s deputy director of investigations, stated: “Combating the organized criminal elements responsible for human trafficking continues to represent a major focus for the NCA, with this matter representing approximately one hundred active operations currently underway targeting persons or groups believed to be engaged in such activities. These criminal organizations capitalize on vulnerable individuals for financial gain—either by endangering their lives during Channel crossings in inadequate vessels, or by exploiting them in the underground labor market after arrival—and we are committed to leveraging every available resource to disrupt their activities.” The National Crime Agency’s inquiry remains active.
