Nottingham Restaurant Closes After Years Serving Hearty Meals to Locals

The venue had operated for three decades when it ceased trading once more. The establishment on Mansfield Road has undergone multiple ownership changes in recent years.

It initially shut its doors in autumn 2023 without clarification, before relaunching the following August under fresh management, and has since changed hands once more.

The most recent proprietors have now departed. While the dine-in service has ended, a takeaway operation continues through popular delivery apps until the contract expires in September.

The property with distinctive purple signage, situated on Mansfield Road in Nottingham’s central area, welcomed its first customers in 1990 under considerably different economic conditions.

Consumer habits were markedly different then, dining out was far more commonplace, eateries faced far less rivalry than exists presently, and the hospitality sector had not been hit by the severe cost increases that followed the pandemic, the conflict in Ukraine and tensions involving Iran.

The operators, Rose and Chan, displayed notices in the establishment’s windows outlining the rationale behind shutting the 42-seat venue, a choice they stressed had been carefully considered.

They acknowledged that following extensive deliberation, they had arrived at the painful conclusion to shut the dine-in operation permanently.

Unexpected circumstances affecting their head chef alongside mounting operational expenses meant continuation had become impossible.

They noted that as an independent venue of modest scale, they encountered business rates that in their assessment failed to appropriately match the dimensions of their operation, rendering sustainable functioning increasingly challenging.

After expressing heartfelt gratitude to patrons for their loyalty, they left a farewell message for prospective new occupants of the premises.

The closure will undoubtedly sadden regular visitors, who have consistently left complimentary feedback in their most recent assessments. One patron described it as Nottingham’s finest Thai establishment, noting exceptional service and superior, flavourful cuisine with no improvements needed.

Another visitor remarked on the thoroughly enjoyable experience, praising the exceptionally tasty dishes bursting with authentic flavour, the inviting and comfortable setting that made dining there a pleasure, and the warm, hospitable team who enhanced the occasion further.

Patrons characterised the fare as genuinely Thai, as though dining in the country itself, with numerous reviewers concluding they would definitely return.

The Royal Thai joins a growing list of shuttered Thai venues locally. The nearby Lobster Pot, also on Mansfield Road, ceased operations abruptly citing unexpected developments, while Paste on Carlton Street in Hockley has been listed for sale.

Rosa’s Thai, a larger chain outlet on King Street, shut down in 2024 after just twelve months of trading, citing difficult market conditions.

Currently, only Zaap, a street food concept on Bromley Place, and the established Chai Yo Thai in the city centre remain operational.
