Fire crews have been working to extinguish a massive blaze in the vicinity of the former Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, producing smoke that was visible across a wide area.
Numerous accounts reported that a significant fire started in the Barton-in-Fabis area on Sunday afternoon (July 12), and video evidence suggests it occurred in fields alongside the A453 Remembrance Way.
Witnesses indicated they spotted the blaze in fields just before reaching Barton-in-Fabis, and images reveal the smoke was observable from both the Chilwell Retail Park and the Attenborough Nature Reserve.
Staff at the nature reserve shared a statement expressing gratitude to those who had reported the ongoing fire in the fields adjacent to the reserve. They confirmed that firefighters were conscious of the situation and actively responding. The statement urged heightened caution during the warm conditions and requested that any fires be reported by dialling 999. Requests for additional details have been made to Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue.
Emergency services had previously advised that there was a heightened danger of wildfires nationwide this weekend as a result of the exceptionally warm conditions.
