Black smoke from the fire has been visible from miles away

The battle to put out a huge fire that broke out at a Nottingham scrapyard and sent vast plumes of smoke into the sky is expected to take “several more hours”.

The blaze at the business on Radford Road, Old Basford, was first reported at 10.31am this morning (Wednesday, July 8).

A number of residents in the area of Hucknall Road/Radford Road have reported seeing black smoke overhead, and the fire service has warned people to keep their windows and doors closed while the incident is dealt with.

A Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS) spokesperson said: “We’re currently in attendance at a scrapyard fire on Radford Road, Basford. The call came in at 10.31am.

“We’ve got six fire appliances and an aerial ladder platform in attendance, and understand there is a large smoke plume.

“Please close doors and windows if you live or work locally.

“Importantly, please avoid the area – this is an emergency incident and it’s important our crews have space to work and access the site.”

In a more recent update, the fire service said at 4.30pm that crews were continuing to fully extinguish the fire.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for several more hours, NFRS added.

A cordon remains in place and roads remain closed as emegergency services continue their efforts.

Radford Road remains closed in both directions between Wilkinson Street and Silverdale Road.

One business which is situated just inside the outer cordon has told the Nottingham Post how the fire may cost them thousands in the long run.

Kyle Ryan is the owner of Perceptive Fittings, a hardware shop in Radford Road. He said: “We’ve got no staff or customers.

“A company down the road that we deal with have been kicked out. We’ve been told it’s going to be four or five hours today. We can’t go home in case they reopen it.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix confirms that Radford Road remains closed in both directions between Wilkinson Street and Silverdale Road as fire crews continue to try and extinguish the fire.

The traffic monitoring service also says there is queueing traffic on surrounding roads as a result of the closure.

Incident commander Tom Staples told the media at the scene: “We’ve got a large amount of scrap metal on fire. Currently the incident is under control.

“We’ve evacuated approximately five homes in the immediate vicinity. The business affected has been evacuated.

“We are optimistic that in the next few hours, they will be able to return to their homes. It’s too early to tell [what started the fire], but we’ll do a thorough investigation once the fire has been put out.”

Mr Staples also said the fire was “contained” within the scrapyard and that no injuries had been reported as a result of the fire at this stage.

Tammy Graham is a tenant of one of the five houses that have been evacuated. She described the emotional moment where she was forced to leave her pets in her home after police knocked on her door to evacuate her and her family.

She said: “Obviously we have had to leave our animals in the house. I saw the smoke and we called the fire service.

“My daughter was panicking because she wasn’t there and she was worried about the animals. They have been giving us updates but what can we do?

“They just have to do their job. You can still see the flames so it’s still going. My daughter was distraught, she was crying her eyes out. We’ve had to leave our dogs, cats and guinea pigs in the back room.”
