Nottingham City Council launches Local Plan consultation

Published on

Nottingham residents, workers, students and investors have been asked to contribute to the development of their city’s planning framework.

Nottingham City Council unveiled its consultation on a fresh Local Plan on Wednesday 23 September, establishing the initial formal step toward a new policy document intended to steer the city’s growth, renewal and transformation in subsequent years.

The document will serve as the primary reference for determining planning permissions throughout the urban area while directing choices regarding housing construction, employment opportunities, transport systems, environmental matters, cultural heritage, public health and climate action.

Rather than presenting a favoured development approach or nominating specific building locations, the consultation seeks input on the principal concerns, possibilities and objectives that ought to direct forthcoming planning policy.

Local inhabitants and interested parties have been invited to express which matters hold greatest significance and where emphasis should be placed.

The consultation documentation incorporates a Strategic Environmental Assessment Scoping Report and aligns with the Nottingham City Vision alongside established research findings.

The Vision articulates a collective aspiration for the city’s development, expansion and future prosperity, structured around three central pillars: creating a city of thriving, varied residential areas where inhabitants enjoy healthy lives; establishing a prominent urban centre at the core of a flourishing regional economic landscape; and positioning Nottingham as an attractive location for commerce, cultural activities, sporting events and visitors.

Councillor Jay Hayes, the Executive Member for Housing and Planning at Nottingham City Council, stated that the new Local Plan would prove instrumental in moulding the city’s trajectory.

The framework would enable planning for residential developments, employment creation, transportation networks, green spaces, community amenities and commercial investment while safeguarding the characteristics that render Nottingham an attractive place to reside, conduct business and explore.

Residents, enterprises, community organisations and stakeholders have been urged to participate at this preliminary phase.

The consultation window provides an opportunity for individuals to communicate which challenges they believe the Local Plan should prioritise and to help determine the direction of future planning policies.

The Local Plan consultation period extends until Wednesday 28 October 2026.

Members of the public can access the consultation materials and lodge responses through the council’s online platform.
