Old Newark Bank Building Gets New Life as Housing Project

A banking location in Newark’s town center has received council approval for conversion into residential units.

Kirby Homes submitted plans to Newark and Sherwood District Council in November 2025 seeking permission to transform the empty TSB building on Castle Gate into four flats.

The council has approved the proposal comprising one single-bedroom dwelling and three two-bedroom residences.

The Newark TSB location shut its doors in May 2023 following an examination of customer behavior that revealed significant dependence on online banking services. The property was subsequently advertised for rental purposes through estate agency Wood Moore and Co.

The vacant building dates from the mid-20th century and features traditional design elements consistent with the character of the surrounding street. The development will maintain the current building footprint while preserving the existing front windows and doors to align with the original style and color scheme.

Only the exterior staircase will be removed, with no other alterations to the building’s external appearance in order to preserve its character in keeping with Castle Gate Street and the Newark Conservation Area.

The addition of these homes addresses the council’s shortage of new housing, as planning documentation indicates the authority currently lacks a five-year housing land supply.

No parking facilities have been included in the proposals, though planners deemed this appropriate given the central town center position, established parking restrictions and proximity to public transportation.

The new apartments will be situated within walking distance of historic Newark Castle and its grounds, where restoration work is currently underway on the gatehouse structure.

The £6.7 million initiative, financed by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, national government and the district council, seeks to improve the visitor experience and upgrade the castle’s gardens.
