Kirkby-in-Ashfield’s old church workshop could find fresh purpose

A vacant religious building in a Nottinghamshire settlement could be converted into supported housing if a planning proposal receives approval. The former St Andrews Church, constructed from brick on Marlborough Road in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, was originally built during the interwar years but stopped functioning as a place of worship in 1961. The premises later served multiple purposes, including operating as a workshop, while certain records suggest it was also converted into a home. By spring 2025, the property was marketed as a six-bedroom home and featured on Newton Fallowell estate agent listings as sold for £180,000. A developer named Marlborough Road Apartments Ltd has now submitted plans to Ashfield District Council seeking permission to create eight supported living apartments, including communal sitting rooms and car parking facilities. The paperwork indicates the homes would be suitable for people with learning disabilities, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, mental health conditions, and physical disabilities. The application explains that any future staff would work in rotating shifts, with continuous on-site support available and sleeping accommodation for night-time staff located within the building. If the plans receive approval, the historic church building would incorporate two new extensions, with the western part extended across both floors while the southern side would only see expansion at first-floor level. The scheme intends to improve the property’s external appearance, which has been affected by alterations deemed unsuitable in previous years, with some of these changes to be hidden behind the proposed new structures. The currently blocked-up church windows would be partially revealed during the conversion work, while substantial elements of the building’s original architectural features would be retained. A letter from Nottinghamshire County Council dated July 2025, published via the district council’s planning portal, indicated at that time the authority would not have a legal requirement to place individuals at the site but recognised they had an immediate requirement for such accommodation. The County Council stated it was working to establish additional housing options for a substantial number of individuals awaiting placement in the Ashfield Area. Ashfield District Council will decide the application’s fate at an upcoming meeting. Nottinghamshire County Council was invited to provide comment.
