The fate of a Nottingham adult retail outlet hangs in the balance following proposals to divide the premises and construct apartments above it. The Private Shop on Upper Parliament Street has been providing adult products and entertainment merchandise for over thirty years, yet its continuation remains unclear. This follows council approval in July last year for plans to partition the shop into two distinct commercial spaces and transform the upper levels into seven residential units. Manager Barry Maltby stated he remains in a state of uncertainty and has received no information regarding the shop’s future. He explained that no construction work has commenced and nobody from the planning side has visited since approval was granted, adding that he remains unaware of what the current intentions are. He noted that trade has been consistent but not exceptional, and that since the pandemic trading has not returned to typical levels, though customers are gradually returning. Nottingham City Council disposed of the property for just under half a million pounds in 2022 after abandoning its own regeneration initiative for the location. Initial proposals for the site were lodged in October 2024. Applicant Weidong Li indicated the scheme aims to fully utilise the site’s capabilities. The existing structure comprises two floors at the front elevation and three floors at the rear. Planning documentation stated the modifications would create a separate glazed entrance for each commercial unit facing Upper Parliament Street, while the existing side access points would serve as the residential entry from the adjacent alleyway. A new bicycle storage facility would be established for occupants in the rear courtyard area, which would be enclosed and shielded from the elements. Documentation noted that due to its central urban position, car parking provision was deemed unnecessary, thereby promoting more environmentally friendly transportation options.
