Firefighters have left the site of a large industrial blaze on the border between Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, two weeks after the emergency began. The flames erupted at the Hathernware Industrial Estate in Sutton Bonington on Wednesday 15 April, with Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service announcing that operations ceased on Sunday 26 April. Crews reported that the fire destroyed buildings, trailers, timber, pallets and shipping containers, causing several explosions. Although the blaze was brought under control on the day it started, firefighters remained at the scene for several days to tackle hidden pockets of fire within the large quantities of waste stored at the site. A statement from the fire service on Sunday said teams were walking through the surrounding area to provide fire safety advice and comfort to local residents. It said operations had finished after crews made enormous efforts to get the fire under control and deal with remaining hotspots at the location. The emergency required a substantial coordinated response from multiple agencies, with councils, environmental experts and health organisations collaborating throughout. Work continues with partner organisations to assist the recovery process, handle any lingering hazards, and reduce inconvenience to local people.
