Police apprehend three individuals during Nottingham immigration rally

Published on

Nottinghamshire Police have issued a statement regarding the demonstration, stating that three people were arrested at Nottingham’s Old Market Square. Campaigners holding contrasting opinions assembled in the city centre before midday on Sunday, April 26, for both a protest and counter-demonstration concerning immigration. The event, which featured slogans urging an end to mass migration, drew roughly 50 people opposed to illegal immigration, with many waving St George’s flags. Approximately 70 protesters from Stand Up to Racism also gathered in opposition, and the gathering passed without major problems. Police erected a dividing line between the opposing groups to avoid clashes. In comments released at 5.15pm, Nottinghamshire Police Superintendent Simon Allardice noted the factions assembled at around 11.30am, with officers deployed to the site to reassure local residents and uphold order. He said that while three people had been arrested for non-criminal reasons, there were no reports of violence or disorder. A further man was detained in connection with a separate incident that took place outside Nottinghamshire. Nottinghamshire Police supports lawful and peaceful assemblies, and will always act preventatively to ensure this continues. This is why the force strives to balance its approach and implements measures to ensure the rights of everyone participating are acknowledged and protected.
