Forest midfielder Anderson draws interest from rival clubs

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has spoken out against the financial rules that look set to allow Nottingham Forest to profit handsomely from Elliot Anderson’s development this summer. The central midfielder has drawn considerable interest ahead of the transfer window. League holders Manchester City are said to be front-runners for his capture, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea also credited with interest. The Three Lions player’s standout displays for club and country this season have prompted suggestions his valuation could hit around £100 million. This would represent an impressive return on the £35 million Forest paid for him two years earlier – a figure that effectively came to £15 million after goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos joined Forest for £20 million. Adherence to Profitability and Sustainability Rules compelled Newcastle to let Anderson go in 2024. Shearer described it as outrageous that the rules effectively force clubs to offload academy products as they register as pure profit, although he accepts the 23-year-old has flourished with regular opportunities at the City Ground. Shearer expressed strong disagreement on The Rest Is Football podcast when addressing Anderson and PSR. Shearer believes clubs should be encouraged to sell those who did not emerge from their academy and their community, stating this is completely wrong. Shearer pointed out the paradox of investing in developing players from childhood only to have to sell them to remain competitive. Shearer acknowledged things have worked out well for Anderson, noting he likely would not have had as many opportunities at Newcastle, but his value has increased significantly due to his achievements and talent and everything else. Anderson will have many options with top clubs expected to pursue him. Shearer predicted Anderson will thrive for England during the World Cup in the summer, showing the same effectiveness he demonstrated at Forest. Shearer noted Anderson has gone out there, featured consistently, demonstrated his quality and developed. Anderson has grown substantially. Anderson has more than confirmed his value on the grandest stage. Shearer admitted he did not anticipate him reaching this level but talent was undeniably present.
