Information has been released regarding when Nottingham residents can anticipate the launch of a new recycling collection, with the city trailing behind other parts of the nation by several years. Food waste collection services have been introduced throughout the majority of the country following research revealing that the UK’s yearly waste could generate sufficient energy to supply millions of households. Local authorities were required to implement the new household food waste service by March 2026 – however, both Nottingham City Council and every council in Nottinghamshire have announced postponements. Collections for Nottinghamshire residents will commence one year later, in 2027, while Nottingham City Council had previously indicated an extended delay until 2030. The council has now confirmed that the precise date for complete implementation of its food waste collection service will be June 2030. The authority has merely initiated a tendering procedure to secure a company to process and handle the collected food waste. The five-year agreement is anticipated to be valued at approximately £750,000 for whichever business is selected. Nottingham presently relies on an external contractor for its current commercial food waste collections, and beginning this year, the council is bringing those collections internally prior to the domestic service launching. The former external contractor managed the waste processing and treatment – meaning Nottingham City Council must now secure its own business for this task. While the complete implementation will not commence until June 2030, the council had previously confirmed that a phased introduction of the new food waste collection would start from March 2028.
