Two friends were left confused and amused after spending £4.50 on what they believed was a portion of cheesy chips at a Wetherspoons branch in Nottingham, only to receive an unconventional deconstructed version instead.
Joe Bull and his 24-year-old companion Johnny arrived at The Woodthorpe Top JD Wetherspoon in Mapperley, Nottingham on 29 June for something to eat.
Johnny submitted an order through the Wetherspoons application for what he believed was a serving of cheesy chips priced at £4.50, anticipating a serving of warm chips smothered in melted cheese.
Instead, the pair found themselves laughing when what arrived was described as a deconstructed offering consisting of two slices of cold cheese presented on one of the pub chain’s characteristic blue and white plates, alongside a bowl of chilly chips.
The studio engineer mentioned he had at least anticipated the cheese would be placed atop the chips, though he conceded the chips were rather cold meaning the cheese would not have melted regardless.
Johnny was so amused by the order that he uploaded footage of their meal to social media, with users quickly branding the Wetherspoons creation outrageous and dreadful.
Despite this ordering mishap, Joe insists he will carry on frequenting Wetherspoons because it offers affordable meals and beverages.
Joe, who hails from Nottingham, explained that his mate placed the order through his phone, selecting the standard cheesy chips option. The chips were somewhat cold and this was not what one anticipates receiving when ordering cheesy chips. He said they were all creasing up and that was the reason he started filming as he thought it would make amusing content for TikTok, describing it as simply ridiculous and absurd. When you picture cheesy chips, you’d imagine hot chips with melted cheese draped over them. Even as a bare minimum, you’d expect the cheese to sit atop the chips. The cheese arrived on a separate plate, making it simply not what you anticipate.
Joe revealed they raised their complaint with a member of staff, who apparently informed them they had selected the incorrect variety of cheese if they desired it melted onto their chips.
Joe added that they approached the bar and pointed out this was not cheesy chips. The woman attempted to argue that within the Wetherspoons app you have the option to select either American cheese or an alternative cheese variety. Apparently if you opt for American cheese they do not include it on top, so she claimed their cheese selection was the reason the chef plated it separately. He personally would never order cheesy chips but nothing would deter him from visiting Wetherspoons nowadays. Given the cost of living, even if they do occasionally slip up with an order, Wetherspoons remains an affordable, enjoyable establishment.
Following the TikTok upload, the video accumulated over 184,000 views and 13,000 approvals, with numerous viewers siding with him.
One observer commented that it was outrageous. Another remarked they could not believe anyone would pay five pounds for DIY cheesy chips. A third viewer observed it was deconstructed cheesy chips in the name of culinary creativity. A fourth stated it was absolutely dire.
Conversely, some defended Wetherspoons, suggesting the pair had simply selected the wrong item from the menu.
One response indicated they had ordered chips as a side and American burger cheese as a side to apparently save 20 pence. Another pointed out they had ordered chips and American cheese slices as two separate items and then complained about it.
Wetherspoons has opted not to provide a statement.
