People have been asked to avoid an area on the Nottinghamshire – Leicestershire border as fire crews tackle a large blaze which has ripped through buildings, trailers, timber and pallets.
Crews from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derby rushed to tackle a blaze at the Hathernware Industrial Estate, in Sutton Bonington, which started on the morning of Wednesday, April 15.
The blaze also ripped through cylinders causing explosions which led to “some loud bangs”.
In its latest update at 3.11pm, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said its attendance at the scene was being ‘scaled down’.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Firefighters are still on scene at this incident, but our attendance is now being scaled down.
“Following the initial call at 10.47am, there was a significant smoke plume that forced closure of nearby railway lines. However, the fire is now surrounded and the rail lines have now been fully re-opened.
“People living locally are still advised to keep windows and doors closed, and not to be alarmed by any loud bangs heard in the area.”
A PhD student at the University of Nottingham’s nearby Sutton Bonington campus recalled the explosions and said “it sounded like something crashed into the side of the building”.
James O’Hare, studying at the university, said: “There was a large bang that sounded like something crashed into the side of the building. The building shook on impact. It was a shockwave.”
Hungary Lane Organics, a nearby farm, also said explosions had been heard during the Hathernware Industrial Estate fire. “A bit of a drama in the farm yard this morning, in a fog of smoke,” the farm posted to Facebook.
“A small fire started on the industrial estate which backs onto our fields, which then turned into a big fire and some explosions Thankfully nobody is hurt, and the fire brigade are over there doing their thing.”
