Investigators are examining issues surrounding the activities of murderer Valdo Calocane and his contacts with individuals during the period preceding the Nottingham assault. Calocane, who received a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, killed three people with a knife in the early morning of June 13, 2023: 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, along with 65-year-old grandfather Ian Coates. The perpetrator subsequently attempted to kill three additional individuals using a van he had taken from Mr Coates. Dr Sanjoy Kumar, father of Grace, disclosed that he had voiced worries to Nottinghamshire Police about Calocane’s whereabouts in the half-day leading up to the violence, including his encounters with various people. He had arranged to meet a detective chief inspector from the force in London on Thursday, April 23, after originally intending to journey to Nottingham to file a complaint. A representative for Nottinghamshire Police stated that an officer from the force did meet Dr Kumar on April 23. Dr Kumar communicated several concerns which are currently under examination. Since these matters form part of a public inquiry that is still in progress, the force declined to provide additional remarks. Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live outside Mary Ward House, where the public inquiry into the circumstances of the attacks is being held, Dr Kumar expressed appreciation that authorities were treating his concerns with appropriate gravity. He stated that after information emerged during the Nottingham Inquiry, he had requested Nottinghamshire Police to look further into potential criminal conduct. He expressed thanks to Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden and Chief Constable Steve Cooper for treating these issues and concerns seriously and for arranging a detective chief inspector to document his concerns and the possibility of a further investigation. The Nottingham Inquiry hearings have been taking place in London since late February, scrutinising both the circumstances that preceded and the response to Calocane’s violent episode. Flaws on the part of police services, the NHS and regulatory bodies have all been brought to light during the proceedings, which are being presided over by retired judge Her Honour Deborah Taylor. The inquiry was previously presented with CCTV images of Calocane at London St Pancras Station on the evening prior to the attacks. He reached Nottingham station at 11.25pm, before dispatching to his brother Elias 1,400 files pertaining to topics of mind control and surveillance. From that location he proceeded to New Basford, then Ilkeston Road where he carried out his initial murders.
