A man accused of trying to kill his partner at her address in East Leake has appeared in court. Dressed in a prison-issued grey sweatshirt, 30-year-old Shaquel Kerr was not asked to enter any plea to attempted murder when he appeared over a video-link at Nottingham Crown Court from HMP Nottingham on Thursday, April 23. Members of both the victim and the defendant’s family were in court for the short hearing which saw Nirmal Shant KC set a provisional trial date of September 14. Remanding the accused into custody until his next court appearance on June 19, she said: “Mr Kerr as far as you are concerned your trial date has been fixed to September 14 but before then there will be a further hearing on June 19 and by that stage you will have all of the prosecution’s evidence and your solicitors will have contacted you for a defence case statement. “The first thing they want to do is receive a psychiatric report to see if you are fit to plead or not. “In the meantime you are remanded into custody.” The judge also asked the prosecutor, Peter Joyce KC, “There is a question about the severity of the injuries and there is likely to be an update on that in the near future?” He replied: “As I understand the situation she has come round (in hospital) but it is not known yet whether she is able to be interviewed at all. “It is early stages in this sense and that is going to take time. “I know having spoken to Mr (Amjad) Hussian (defending) he seeks a psychiatric report as to his client’s fitness to plead. “There is going to be an awful lot of medical evidence.” Police charged Kerr, of Pamela Road, Northfield, Birmingham, after a woman was found critically injured inside her address in Bley Avenue, at 4.29pm on Tuesday, March 31. Speaking at the time, Nottinghamshire Police said that the injured woman, who is in her late-20s, remained in hospital in a critical condition . Speaking previously, Detective Chief Inspector Les Charlton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was an isolated incident inside a home but we understand residents in the area may have been concerned by the police presence. “I hope they are reassured by our investigation which has now seen a suspect placed before the courts at the earliest opportunity.” Also speaking to NottinghamshireLive at the time, a resident, who was working from home when he noticed five or six police cars arrive on Tuesday afternoon, said: “We’ve not known about anything that was actually happening. “I was working from home and it was probably between four and five when I saw the police arrive,” the man, who did not want to be named, said. “It was very daunting especially on Tuesday there were probably about five or six police vehicles when it was all kicking off. “It is a shock, we only moved in about six months ago, it is quite shocking in this area. We’ve certainly not seen anything like this before.
