Nottinghamshire Police left the city centre unprotected after killer Valdo Calocane’s first two victims died, returning to headquarters to replenish first aid kits and change their uniforms. Paranoid schizophrenic Calocane killed University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar and school caretaker Ian Coates on June 13, 2023. He also attempted to murder Wayne Birkett, Marcin Gawronski and Sharon Miller. The Nottingham Inquiry, chaired by Her Honour Deborah Taylor, is examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedies. It is investigating whether opportunities were missed to stop the killer carrying out his attacks. Chief Inspector David Mather told the hearing on March 13 that three firearms vehicles were deployed to Ilkeston Road, where Barney and Grace were attacked. Calocane was still on the loose when the vehicles were deployed back to the force’s headquarters at Sherwood Lodge, in Arnold, some eight miles away. “This was, in part, to replenish first aid kits and change contaminated uniforms,” CI Mather said in his evidence. Sergeant Reynolds had earlier told the hearing he received no assistance about where to look for Calocane when he took initiative to conduct a search. The previous day, Superintendent Simon Allardice had confirmed Calocane’s whereabouts on the day of the attacks.
