Valdo Calocane ‘showed no emotion’ after Nottingham attacks

Published on

The Nottingham Inquiry heard that Valdo Calocane displayed ‘no real emotion’ upon his apprehension following the fatal assaults that occurred on June 13, 2023. The proceedings, under the leadership of Her Honour Deborah Taylor, have been investigating the police reaction to Calocane’s violence and whether the tragedies could have been averted. Evidence presented showed that Nottingham’s city centre was left ‘vulnerable’ after armed personnel were instructed to return to headquarters while Calocane remained at large. Documentation showed armed response vehicles were heading back to HQ before the four victims were attacked. University students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, alongside pensioner Ian Coates, lost their lives at the hands of the individual suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. Calocane subsequently tried to kill three additional people by using Mr Coates’ stolen van to strike them. The officer who made the arrest, providing testimony on March 16, stated that Calocane was holding a knife when law enforcement arrived. A detective inspector also expressed her ‘disappointment’ regarding inadequate information sharing during the situation. The investigation is ongoing in London.
