The location operates without any staff members or ticket facilities, and passengers must cross an unguarded level crossing to switch between platforms. Earlier reporting indicated the station first opened its doors in 1850, though passenger numbers gradually dwindled throughout the twentieth century. The current count of 68 marks a significant drop compared to the previous year, which registered 212 entries. The station apparently continues functioning because arranging occasional stops demands less paperwork than securing approval for permanent closure. Railway enthusiast Claire Martin, who has amassed more than 20,000 followers on Instagram under the username clairesfootsteps, recently made a visit to experience the location firsthand. When sharing video from her trip, she identified the location as Britain’s least-used station with only 68 passengers recorded during the 2024 to 2025 period. She noted the presence of two platforms and mentioned that crossing between them required using an unattended level crossing. She also mentioned that one train runs in each direction daily, with the next departure due within minutes. When filming a departure, she observed that no passengers boarded or alighted, though the train did stop as expected. She explained that the service she filmed was travelling westward toward Nottingham, while eastward services stop at Grantham before continuing to Skegness. Members of the public shared their thoughts in response. One person noted that the process for closing a station in the UK is so expensive and time-consuming that companies generally do not attempt it. Another person pointed out that the positive aspect is that the station remains operational despite minimal usage, serving those few individuals who require it. A spokesperson for the organization has previously noted that usage at some of the least-used stations included in these statistics has increased in subsequent years, and that publicizing the least-used stations can encourage people to visit them. The ranking positions Elton and Orston in Nottinghamshire at 68, followed by Shippea Hill in Cambridgeshire at 76, Ince and Elton in Cheshire at 98, Denton in Greater Manchester at 100, and Reddish South in Greater Manchester at 102.
