Opening date announced for Nottingham’s new Trent bridge

Published on

A fresh river crossing is set to open in Nottingham, giving walkers and cyclists a safe new path between Trent Basin and Lady Bay. Waterside Bridge will finally become accessible to the public seven years after local authorities first identified the demand for such a route. The 175-tonne structure was installed in November 2025, following more than four years since the initial plans were revealed. The scheme faced multiple delays, with costs rising to £18 million – double the original projection – through funding from the Government’s Transforming Cities programme. Nottingham City Council granted permission in April 2024, with Rushcliffe Borough Council doing the same the following month. Both authorities had to give consent because the bridge crosses their boundaries. Members of the public can use the bridge from Tuesday, June 2 at midday, when an official ceremony will mark its opening. The 87-metre structure was manufactured in Hucknall using British steel before being moved eight miles to its current position at Trent Basin. It will connect the areas of Sneinton and Lady Bay while offering fresh links to green spaces such as Colwick Country Park and the Holme Pierrepont and Skylarks nature reserve. This will provide new routes for pedestrians and cyclists alongside current upgrades to Daleside Road and Poulton Drive. Sports fans will also benefit, as it will offer crucial safe passage during events at venues including the City Ground, Notts County Football Club and Nottingham Rugby Club. Councillor Linda Woodings, the council’s executive member for regional development, growth and transport, expressed her delight that Nottingham’s new walking and cycling bridge would welcome visitors from Tuesday 2 June, noting that local schoolchildren would assist with the ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion. She also mentioned that everyone should save the date for the bridge community celebration on Sunday 14 June, describing it as set to be an enjoyable event with numerous complimentary activities for all. The gathering on June 14 will include entertainment and stalls on both sides of the river, with food and drinks, community acts, and free arts and crafts, face painting and games.
