The Nottingham attacks inquiry was informed by police that the absence of “crystal clear” CCTV footage contributed to their difficulty in locating the perpetrator during the day of the violence. Valdo Calocane, who is 34 years old, fatally shot two 19-year-old students from the University of Nottingham, Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, as well as Ian Coates, a 65-year-old supporter of Nottingham Forest, during the early morning of June 13, 2023. The statutory public inquiry examining these tragic incidents, chaired by Her Honour Deborah Taylor, has now entered its fourth week. On Tuesday, the inquiry will receive testimony from individuals involved in Calocane’s initial period in custody. In her opening remarks, Rachel Langdale KC, the inquiry’s counsel, highlighted concerns about whether there was “a missed opportunity for a fuller psychiatric assessment of Valdo Calocane” while he remained in detention. Calocane admitted guilt to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility for the murders. The relatives of the victims had objected to the Crown Prosecution Service accepting manslaughter charges instead of murder charges. Ms Langdale stated that the inquiry “will examine the underlying factual material in the case of VC relating to the psychiatric evidence obtained for the sentencing hearing.
