Foster carer shares two and a half year journey helping children feel safe and thrive

Published on

A foster carer from the East Midlands region has spoken about her experiences looking after children of various ages, describing the transformations she has witnessed as young people develop feelings of safety and security.

The individual has provided care for children on a long-term basis and, for approximately two and a half years, has specialised in supporting infants and toddlers.

Experience also extends to caring for older children and adolescents, including teenagers.

Among the most significant moments recalled involve observing children progress from merely existing to actively flourishing.

According to the carer, with babies this often manifests when they transition from appearing disengaged and unresponsive to suddenly beginning to interact, smile and make eye contact as they become comfortable enough to engage with their surroundings.

Comparable developments have been observed in older children as they begin to experience genuine security.

One particular case involved a teenager who had previously been viewed as difficult and confrontational within the school environment.

As the young person began to feel more protected, her anxiety decreased significantly, allowing those working with her to perceive the genuine child beneath the challenging exterior.

The carer noted that such moments reveal the authentic individual when children finally experience the security needed to express their true selves.

A central message conveyed to those considering fostering concerns the importance of emotional attachment.

The carer emphasised that developing bonds with children represents the fundamental purpose of the role, stating that children require the experience of having an adult who authentically cares about them and remains emotionally committed to their welfare.

The individual explained that as a stable adult, there exists sufficient capacity to manage the emotional difficulty of eventual separation.

The preference expressed was for the adult to shoulder that eventual parting rather than for a child to bear the weight of never having experienced genuine love.

For this carer, the essence of fostering lies in providing children with an opportunity every young person deserves: the chance to feel secure, appreciated and cared for deeply.
