The establishment has become empty and abandoned
The council is looking for businesses and community groups to take on the premises of a once-popular Nottinghamshire pub that has fallen into a state of disrepair.
Broxtowe Borough Council has indicated it is receptive to creative new proposals for the former Chequers Inn building in Stapleford, which has been empty since shutting its doors in 2022.
The premises at the intersection of Nottingham Road and Derby Road has become a location associated with anti-social behaviour in recent years.
Fire crews attended the former establishment in November after a bonfire got out of control on the grounds. The venue had been rebranded as The Old Rock in 2016.
Police have also been seen responding to various incidents at the location over the years, with one local resident stating he experienced sleep disturbances for an entire year because of problems at the former establishment.
Long-awaited renovation work on the building was announced in April, with the council compelling the landlord to let out the property through a new mechanism called the High Street Rental Auction.
In the latest update regarding the site’s future, the council says it is accepting applications from businesses and community organisations interested in leasing the premises for a minimum of five years.
Until August 19, prospective tenants can arrange to view the former eyesore, and the council says additional financial incentives may be available for any suitable businesses wishing to establish themselves in Stapleford.
Councillor Milan Radulovic MBE, whose portfolio includes property, stated the venue has been empty for a considerable time and has become somewhat of a burden on Stapleford, particularly given its prominent position in the town.
He said he was extremely pleased the council had been able to progress so swiftly with the High Street Rental Auction process on this property and can now look forward to the premises becoming a thriving hub in the town centre, which he believes many residents will welcome.
The building’s renovation is being financed by a government grant of £196,500 and encompasses new plumbing and toilets, replastering and repainting, and new windows, with the worn exterior also set to be replaced.
Broxtowe Borough Council previously addressed social media speculation suggesting the building would be converted into a house in multiple occupation.
